1. Impressionism

In the time period between 1870 and 1900, a new movement of art and music formed. Artists were tired of having to follow the strict rules of how to paint or not to paint, thus revolted and created a new art form which gave artists more freedom. Musicians as well were tired of the music form of Romanticism, and created a new type of music which didn't follow the rules of music. Many people at the time disliked this movement of music and art, but today this time period is considered one of the many turning points of cultural history.

2. Art in the Impressionism in general

In the 19th century, artists were tired of the strict rules which told one how to paint. They wanted to try something new. These artists went out into the nature and painted what they saw. They painted quickly to capture the image before it changed, because the sun would move and the wind direction would alter the way the natural environment looked.

Their brush strokes were quick and short. The artwork wasn't to recreate exact details, but create an impression of the environment. The painter were criticised of being lazy, and not putting effort into details. Their artwork was considered underclass and rushed

3. Monet

Monet was born in 1840 in Paris, France. His family moved to Le Havre when he was five years old. He went to school to learn how to draw, and he loved it, though a famous painter with the name Eugene Boudin came to him when he was 18 years old and persuaded him to become a painter.

Monet is one of the most famous Impressionistic painters of all time. He painted straight onto the canvas, and rarely mixed colours on a palette. Instead, he would mix colours on the canvas, creating new colours all the time. He painted with quick, short strokes in order to capture the "changes in nature" before they disappeared.
He is most famous for his paintings of waterlillies, and his paintings of the Rouen Cathedral.

6. Music in the Impressionism in general

This style of music was inspired by French painters. Their brush strokes were rapid and rough, leaving only an impression of the image. This is what Claude Debussy wanted to create with his music. And impression. Impressionistic music doesn't stick to the traditional style of music, as it plays upon different harmonies and timbres. The music often creates an atmosphere. It was not unusual that a piano piece had multiple keys playing at the same time (for instance, the left hand would play in one key and the right would play in another).

7. Debussy

Claude Debussy was born on the 22nd of August, 1862. He died in Paris on the 25th of March, 1918.
